City College Norwich becomes first university of FE

publication date: May 1, 2008
author/source: Ed Tranham

City College Norwich together with the MOD, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation and the Professional Lighting and Sound Association are among the second wave of organisations to achieve awarding body status. The QCA’s new Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) enables learners to build up qualifications from units, allowing them to control their own pace of learning by gaining qualifications over time.

City College Norwich is the first FE provider to become an awarding body – in effect becoming the first university of further education. The college is working with the National Skills Academy Financial Services and major insurance companies such as Marsh and Norwich Union to accredit bespoke financial sector courses. It is likely that other FE colleges will win this status under the current reforms of the qualifications system.
