Few will have heard of US company WorldSage, but you may be hearing more about them soon. WS was established in 2006 by John Grillos who has had an interesting career in finance and e-learning. One of his previous roles was as a director of SmartForce, an e-learning company that was merged with Ireland’s SkillSoft in 2002. He has also worked at Draper Fisher Jurvetson, one of the best-known Californian VC firms (Skype, Hotmail, etc), as well being one of the founders of VC firm ITech Partners. His Exec VP is Dr Bobbi Kurshan (also Executive Director of Curriki), but also on WS’s board of advisors is none other than Stephen Heppell.

While Heppell is well-known in the UK, this looked liked an unusual appointment until you read WS’s mission statement which includes the following. ‘Our focus will be to combine the bricks and mortar acquisition strategy of Laureate Education with the online growth strategy of the Apollo Group, becoming the first company to do so at scale in Europe. WorldSage is developing relationships with over 20 leading private universities in the EU and intends to leverage these relationships to begin building the WorldSage system’.

Just who these 20 institutions are is not clear, and we have asked WS if any of them are in the UK. They haven’t replied so far, but if they do we will let you know.
